Sleepy Head

Look who we caught today, having a nap on the soft, water-soaked grass. Who knows what dreams are being dreamt of whilst she’s all tuckered out?

Elephants sleep on the floor when they feel safe and comfortable, or when they are young and need to lie down for more rest. While adult elephants often sleep standing up in the wild for quicker escape from predators, they will lie down for a deeper, REM sleep or when they feel completely secure, like in protected environments or for a midday siesta.

Reasons elephants sleep on the floor

Safety: Elephants lie down to sleep when they feel a high level of security in their environment. In the wild, this may happen in protected areas or during the day when the herd is together and on alert for predators.

Deep sleep: Lying down allows elephants to enter a deeper, more restorative stage of sleep (REM sleep) that is not possible while standing.

Youth: Young elephants and calves need more sleep and are more vulnerable, so they lie down to rest, often with a mother or other adults nearby for protection.

Comfort: Sleeping on the ground, especially on softer surfaces like sand or straw, can be more comfortable. This is particularly true for elephants in captivity who are provided with suitable bedding and a protected sleeping area.

Physical limitations: Some older elephants or those with injuries may have difficulty getting up after lying down, so they may prefer to sleep leaning against something or simply doze off while standing.
