Did you know Asian elephants have excellent hearing, especially for low-frequency sounds (infrasound) that humans can’t hear, allowing them to communicate over long distances; Their large ears act like satellite dishes to capture these sounds and help with cooling, although their high-frequency hearing is less impressive than a human’s ability.
Key aspects of elephant hearing:
Low-Frequency Specialists – They hear sounds from about 14-16 Hz up to 12,000 Hz, significantly lower than the human range (20 Hz to 20,000 Hz).
Infrasound Communication – They use deep rumbles, too low for humans to hear, to talk to each other miles away, which is vital for coordinating herds and detecting danger.
Seismic Sensing – Elephants also “hear” these low rumbles through vibrations in the ground, detected by sensitive skin on their trunks and feet, as well as their ears.
Ears as Tools – Their large ears gather sound waves, while also helping them cool down by circulating blood and signaling emotions or threats.
Asian vs. African – Asian elephants have smaller, rounder ears than African elephants, which are adapted to their more temperate, forested environments, but they still possess excellent hearing.
